An advertisement placed in the Essex Gazette of February 3, 1772 lists a “Negro Man Named Cesar” for sale. “TO BE SOLD A Negro Man Names Cesar 28 years old: he well understands the Shoreman’s Business of Making Fish, is a prime Chimney Sweeper, and can work on a Farm very well. For further particulars enquire of Nicholas Bartlett of Marblehead.”
